Commuter Fair

Today on Market Square from 11:30 to 2:00 Smart Trips is holding a Commuter Fair. Check it out!

It was a warmer start today and I was able to leave the jacket and gloves at home. It is getting a little easier to get up for the longer ride. Less thirty minutes of sleep is hard to adapt too by will.

Here is a site that can be used to find the lowest gas prices in Knoxville:

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.

Maintenance

I will be riding my backup bike the rest if the week because the primary is in the shop for maintenance. Earth Traverse Outfitters offers (or offered at the time of my purchase) a one year free maintenance agreement. This has been a wonderful benefit with the amount of riding I do. The guys there have really taken care of me too (I bet they love the free advertisement), so if you are on the market for a bicycle or other outdoor gear, swing by and check them out.

The long route has thrown up an obstacle. The city has decided to tear out some of the brand new concrete on the section of Greenway between Neyland Drive and The World’s Fair Park. Using that route is now very difficult. Today I rode an even further route to by-pass that and it worked out ok so I will continue to make the new route work however possible.

The otter was not out today as far as I saw but I will continue to watch for him. The geese are very aggressive this time of year and the squirrels are daredevils!

Here are some statistics that I pulled from Smart Trips. This is the monetary and environmental impact that is a result of my commute From 4-6-2008 to 5-5-2008:

Drive:    28.6%

Bicycle: 71.4%

Vehicle Miles Reduced: 180 Miles

CO2 Emission Reduced: 164.88 lbs

VOC Reduced: 3762 grams

NOX Reduced: 250.2 grams

Fuel and Maintenance Cost Savings: $36.94*
*Based on latest EPA estimates of fuel consumption and an estimated gas price of $3.21 per gallon.

I finished reading The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. If you are looking for a positive outlook on life this book is a good one. It is an easy read but full of good stuff! Of course here is his site:

Interesting!

I had an eventful weekend. Saturday I joined a friend in a strawberry field to pick strawberries which I took home and prepped for Freezing and Jelly making. Those for jelly making were taken as far as being boiled to juice.

Yesterday I woke did my typical routine of yoga and then mowing and then started learning the process of making jelly (I had never made jelly before so I had worked out a jelly for help deal with my aunt). Several hours and lots of work later we had about 18 jars of strawberry jelly (I haven’t gotten to try in yet because it is technically only getting ready now).

Saturday evening I went for a ride and along the way I joined up with a large group of riders. I have seen these guys riding around town but this was the first time that I have joined them. It was lots of fun and I hope to join them again in the future. I took a couple of pictures. This is the best one:

The Pictures I found Friday have been disputed by several family members. Though they very much looks like my grandfather, we have decided that it is not him. In fact, After much scrutiny, I have decided that most of the pictures are of the same man over a long period of time. This was still an interesting investigation.

I got off to a late start today so I road my typical route. Tomorrow I will get back to the longer route. Today’s starting temperature was 48 Degrees.

On Thursday pick up a copy of the Metropulse and look for an ad featuring me promoting Smarttrips. Not sure how it looks yet because the photos were just taken today.

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.

Modified Route

I changed it up a bit today! I still used the Greenway but picked it up at a Tyson Park instead of Sutherland Avenue. This route removed a mile but just wasn’t as soothing. Passing the area I saw the otter yesterday, I was watching for him. I saw him again and tried to get a picture but he got away from me. I did, however; get a family of geese:

There were three other families of geese swimming about but this was the best picture (got to stop relying on the cell phone camera).

An interesting thing happened along the way today. I rounded a curve that runs behind the KUB water treatment facility on Neyland Drive and there were pictures strewn out all over the place. I stopped to take a look at them and the first one I picked up was a picture of my grandfather. I don’t recognize any of the other people in these pictures. I am going to get these all scanned and send them out to family to get input and confirmation that it is my grandfather in the one. Looking at them now, there is one more that could be a great uncle.

You notice little things along the path from a bicycle.

A good plan is like a road map: it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there.

A New Approach

The new route to work using the greenway affords a better sunrise. Unfortunately, I kept getting the lens flare. Having left only 10 minute early, I was clocking in 10 minutes later than usual. The Greenway is the way to go!

With that said, I am going to start looking at the whole ride a little differently. No more lazing about in the morning, I will be getting up about 6:15 AM and out the door no later than 6:45. Why ride 6 miles fast when I can enjoy the nature of the 9 mile route. The early bird gets the worm! In my case, the worm was actually the opportunity to see a river otter and a bird that I am going to have to do a little research to figure out what it was.

Another surprisingly chilly day at 43 Degrees.

Were you affected by Smart Fix 40? There didn’t seem to be anymore traffic than usual on Middlebrook Pike. I am trying to be optimistic about the whole thing and in reality it is probably the best decision for the project. It at least on paper appears that it will save time and tax dollars. Let’s hope that all goes as planned!
