Thursday July 31

There's music in the sighing of a reed;
There's music in the gushing of a rill;
There's music in all things, if men had ears:
Their earth is but an echo of the spheres.

Lord Byron

Several Things

Late yesterday I voluntarily let someone have my early shift so that they can get some things done this afternoon. To my advantage, I was able to get a ride in today. An odd thing happened today: I got off to a slow start and took a few minute longer to get here. Once I was done at the YMCA, I arrived at work ten minutes earlier than usual.

Along the way I noticed a magnificent sunrise. It was glowing orange like about the color of Sorbet! Unfortunately, the camera does it no justice:

Below are some things that I want to let everyone know about. I hope that you all have the opportunity to participate in one of the events. More importantly, read the book that I have link to.

Local Music News: The Inside Scoop that I want to get people thinking about.

Tennessee Shines at the Bijou News

We have a press conference this afternoon at 4:30 at the Bijou to announce details for the upcoming ‘TN Shines live at the Bijou’. This will be a live broadcast radio show that will take place on the last Wednesday of every month, along the lines of an Austin City Limits/Prairie Home Companion combo. We are working with WDVX and the Bijou to make this something great for the community; so far, things look like they’re going to be great. It will be Americana music and I think it’s going to be a very cool project.

‘Discover the Bijou’ Event News

A little info on another project at the Bijou that’s in the works...UT is hosting an event called ‘Discover Downtown’ on the weekend of August 22. They want to expose students to all that downtown has to offer and so they asked that we offer some type of discounted tickets to students at UT at both the TN and Bijou theatres. We are offering a $6 ticket to any UT students who want to see Gone With the Wind at the TN that night, but we didn’t have any shows lined up at the Bijou that night. So, we came up with a fun idea that I think a lot of you will be interested in.

I know that a lot of you, like me, love the local music scene around Knoxville. We’ve come up with an idea to showcase these bands, as well as introduce lots of people to the Bijou. On Friday, August 22, we will be having Llama Train, the Dirty Guv’nahs, Brendon James Wright and the Wrongs, and Boozehound Gandy Dance take the stage. Doors are at 7pm, show at 8pm, $3 for UT students, $5 for non-UT students. It’s going to be crazy and I can’t wait. Spread the word, bring your friends, wear your dancing’ pants and support the Bijou! All proceeds will be split between the bands for their time and energy; they need our support, too!

Also, new to the regional scene is an author and friend of mine: Sybil Browns

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice there is little we can do to change until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds.

An Early Start

This has been a strange week. Monday I could get motivated and today I got an early start. Once I got downtown and showered, I had time to stop off and have some pancakes (mmm...Pancakes) before coming into work.

I didn’t see a soul on the trail today. This is likely due to the fact that sane people aren’t out riding a bicycle at 6:30 AM. Unfortunately, the panhandlers get an early start because I had not made it to the YMCA before I was approached for, “Money to buy a hotdog!”

This was written by Regina Brett of 'The Plain Dealer' of Cleveland, Ohio.

She says, "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 Lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written."

 1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

 4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

 5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

 6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

 7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

 8. It's OK to get angry with God . He can take it.

 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

 10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

 11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

 12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

 13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their Journey is all about.

 14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

 15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye.

 16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

 17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

 18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

 19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

 21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

 22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

 23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

 24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

 25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

 26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'

 27. Always choose life.

 28. Forgive everyone everything.

 29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

 30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

 31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

 32. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

 33. Believe in miracles.

 34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

 35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

 36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

 37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.

 38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

 39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

 40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

 41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

 42. The best is yet to come.

 43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

 44. Yield.

 45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

Opportunities

Riding in this morning was very messy. After the gully washing rains last night, the entire route was wet and many spots were muddy. Of course I was wearing the mud by the time I got to the YMCA. My motivation was up today and I made average time. Again, a full yoga routine really adds to the ease of the ride in by getting my hips loosened up and my spine awake.

I know that I am going to here, “You sure take a lot of vacations!” but it is available and I lose it if I don’t take it. Around the Holidays like Thanks Giving and Christmas, I always work so the people I work with can be home with their kids!

Next week I am taking off to Hike for 4 days and 3 nights. I will be home on Thursday. In the midst of planning, a friend approached me about a long weekend hike that falls on that Friday. I am going to try to do both, assuming that I am able. The deal is this though, I have to come off the trail on Saturday or Sunday (a day or 2 earlier than the others) and will need a ride. Anyone willing to help me out?

Motivation

A series of events over the weekend have led to a lack of motivation this morning. I was at work by 7 AM Saturday and that evening sat up watching a fire burn until 4 am with my Brother. Then yesterday morning was up and at it by 9 AM. Not finishing my day yesterday until around 11:30 PM, my eyes were not ready to open this morning.

Needless to say, I took the short route today. I am starting to build the momentum to complete this day but Zappa Plays Zappa is tonight at the Bijou: it will likely be midnight before I get home tonight! Tomorrow is my late schedule so I will get a chance to rest.

I spent some time clearing out some old books at my house yesterday. I carried two boxes of novels to McKay’s to trade them in. I waited to drop them off about 10 minutes and then when the “order was complete” I waited another 10 minute. Of the 2 boxes, they took nothing! Not wanting to carry them home, I dropped them in the free bin in the front of the store. Next time I am going to get rid of some books, I think I will just put them in a box and leave them in the break room at work and save myself some trouble.

Legendary Bands

Yesterday evening I went to see the Legendary band The Wailers (Bob Marley’s Band). Having seen them twice before, I was very excited to see them again because they have in the past put on a great show. Unfortunately, something was missing last night. I am not quit sure what it was. Having been a fan for many years, I thought that I new most there songs. In the first six they played, I knew two. The ones that I did know seemed to be off time. By the time they were getting to my favorite song ‘Redemption Song’ I was pretty well bored with the whole thing. Redemption song also was not their best performance. Should they be back in town I would see them again without hesitation. Last night just wasn’t the night!

There was nothing special to speak of on the commute today. I saw only one other person on the trail and that was near the end!

Canada Goose

Over the past several months, I have had the opportunity to see the life cycle of the Canada Goose. Around March I guess it was that I first started seeing the hatchlings staggering around. These have now nearly reached maturity and come next spring will leave their parents as they migrate north in the spring. They are odd looking creatures when they are young!

Image:Canada goose gosling - natures pics.jpg

Unfortunately, this layman’s study of geese has taken place on the morning ride not allowing for appropriate documentation. Next spring, I hope to take the time out to take pictures over the process. Of course what would be really cool is to figure out a way to tag and track the same ones and document there growth National Geographic Style (Time to call the Tennessee Ornithological Society)!

As with all life, it eventually ends in death. Neyland Drive is a goose graveyard! I have seen a number of them dead due to being ran over.

I am sure someone is now wondering, “Does Goose taste like chicken?”

East Tennessee Weather

Here we are in the middle of July and we couldn’t ask for better weather! Aside from the rain, the temperatures should be comfortably in the high 80s for the next few days. Riding in the morning was pleasant with temperatures in the low 60s.

That yesterday was such a good day, I was inspired to get up a little earlier and get a bit more stretching in than is usual for a Wednesday. The truth is: it was worth the effort.

Tuesday’s Good

Being that I work late on Tuesdays, I start the day with Yoga. How much is determined by how lazy I am and when I get out of bed. Today, I had a full hour session. To follow was a ride in pleasant temperatures left over from yesterday’s rains. As far as days go, this one has been a pleasant one.

Though I was riding in late, there were two Cyclists and two walkers on the trail today.

Pat Benatar Rocked the Tennessee Theatre last night! That I was able to work the show was the only reason I went but if she comes back, I would not hesitate to pay the Ticket price! Aside from the occasional catch on the radio, I had not listened to her since the hay day of the 80s. I thought, “Yeah she’s up beat. I’ll check it out!” On stage it is a step above ‘upbeat!’

I saw three cyclists on the greenway and three as I enter downtown! The numbers are growing!

Not as Planned

Unfortunately I was not able to make the concert last night for reasons out of my control. Such is life.

Heading in today, there were four Cyclists on the greenway other than myself and no of whom I knew. Two of these I am certain were college students commuting to school and the other two may have just been out for a morning ride. Either way, the greenway is getting busier and busier in the morning. Aside from the cyclists there were also two runners. The weather was perfect for a trip to the greenway.

Because I missed the show, I found myself with several hours of free time. Wanting to utilize this time, I finished reading Yoga as Medicine By Timothy McCall and Yoga Journal. The First chapters were good reading but the final chapters were more therapeutic reference than straight reading. It will stay in my personal library for future study.

It has been a long time but today someone yelled at me on the road. The sad part is, he was yelling from the opposite side of traffic. At least we know where he stand with his temperament.

As a result of Saturday’s excursion in the Blackberries, I have some annoying chigger bites. Despite long pants and DEET I have about six bits. The bee sting wasn’t enough! I would have rather had six bee stings I think!

Missing the Ride

Now that I have arrived in the car, I have come with all sorts of ideas how I could have ridden in today. The fact is that immediately after work I am going to a concert that I expect will last until 10:30 or 11:00 (or later) and I didn’t want to be riding home in the dark that late and then have to be back in the morning. Friends will be there: I should have bummed a ride home! Oh well!

On the Bright side, I had plenty of time to do yoga this morning and that is always a great way to start the day! I also think that I have time to hit the pool for 30 to 45 minutes between work and the show: that would be sweet.

Friday I rode to my Grandparents house with my mother so that on Saturday morning we were able to get up early and pick Blackberries. I think we were a week early judging by the number of unripe berries. We were able to pick about four gallons worth either way. The jelly is the best part of the whole endeavor! Unless of course a cobble is made!

It is always time well spent when your mother is there. I think often I neglect to express that. I know that one should not miss those opportunities! I am trying to recall whether I have ever taken an over night trip just mom and I (in my adult life) and I don’t think we ever have.
